The Background

Signs Now entered a bid via a public tender in early 2013 to carry out a large project for Solihull Community Housing as part of a bigger scheme across several sites. At the time this was the largest refurbishment of housing taking place in the UK and as such required a massive health and safety presence, requiring us to complete a comprehensive Pre-Qualification Questionnaire (PQQ) upon being awarded the contract. There were to be 4 phases and we had 30 blocks of flats to work on, adding new signage to each one. The total project value was £145k.

Health & Safety

We were awarded the contract and had to work with British Gas and EEC as this was a project that formed part of the requirement to reduce energy bills and carbon emission targets by 2020. We were to send only people who were CSCS registered and CRB checked/cleared to work on site to ensure the safety of all involved. We also had to hire in 4 different types of access lift to use on site, as many of the signs were large and to be installed high up on the outside of the building.

The Signs

Each of the 30 buildings that Signs Now worked on had its own name to identify it. We had to install 2 signs on each block - one vertical, one horizontal - all consistent sizes across each building. The signs themselves were built up 3D letters in polished stainless steel with internal white halo LED illumination mounted on to grey powder coated fabricated trays. The signs, including the LEDs, are guaranteed for 5 years. They were large and heavy and needed to be solidly fitted to ensure the safety of visitors and residents, so we had to use special fixings on the buildings.

Challenges

The project wasn't without its challenges. For example, we worked throughout the year including through snow. Also, the residents parking had to be blocked off the night before work was carried out to ensure that people and their vehicles were safe. Installation needed to be safe but we also had to work at specific times so as not to interfere with or disturb residents with noise. There were other health and safety requirements and regulations to consider, such as road management, where we had to adhere to the Chapter 8 requirements whilst undertaking road management at some sites. We had to put boards down to protect grass from access lifts and equipment. But each phase was completed within the required deadlines and the client is extremely happy with the result and the way in which Signs Now worked with them.
